Someone has kindly loaned me a road bike until I can get my own and I went for my first ride today. Aside from the balance issue (which I know will go away with time), I do have one or two problems.
First of all, my hands are killing me. After riding in a fairly upright position on a mountain bike for so long the bent position put more weight on my hands and, no matter where I put them, makes the webbing between my thumb and forefinger sting like heck. Which gloves would you recommend and where could I find them?
Second, does anyone have any tips on how to brake effectively? So far I've been riding at a snail's pace and scrambling to switch hand position from the more comfortable grip before the stop sign comes up. My hands are pretty small so it's tricky.
Despite these minor annoyances (and the fact I've already had two minor spills), I have to say I'm hooked. The difference between a mountain bike and a road bike is incredible. Smooth, quiet, and downright effortless pedaling. I can hardly wait until I'm good enough at handling the thing to go faster. Once I'm better at it and get my mileage back up, look out. I'll be back. |

...your spirit is refreshing.
You can use softer gloves, padding under your bar tape or even add TT bars to take all the weihgt off of your hands.
The TT bars may be a bit challanging for a beginner but keep it in mind for the future.
Is the bike adjusted for you?
...if not see Ely at VV cycles he will set you up and may have more comfort suggestions for your hands.
Have fun and be safe. Steve |

Try tipping your seat back a bit. This puts less pressure on your arms but might be tougher on the butt. |

Heh-heh, I think I'd rather get a better outfit, as in real cycling shorts and gloves. The gloves are less expensive so they'll come first, hopefully Monday. |

WOOT! Got some gloves and they were so comfortable I didn't want to get off the bike this morning. I can brake better, too, as my grip isn't marred by those raggety jersey knit ones I was wearing. I think I'll go for another ride.
The shorts, I may not have until Christmas, but as long as I don't do anything over 20 miles I think I'll surive. |
